In order to explain the processes that govern brain function and the formation of human consciousness, neuroscience studies the development of the nervous system\u2014and in particular, the brain: its anatomy, structure, and functions; the observable connections between brain regions; and the physical, electrical, and biochemical processes involved in the evolution of mental and cognitive states, often relating these to mathematical and computational models. Conscious experience thus appears to emerge from the interactions among a wide network of specific brain regions, particularly from a series of physically interconnected neural circuits that extend from the brainstem to the thalamus and cortex. But why would neural integration give rise to the extraordinary experience of human consciousness\u2014especially a consciousness that is aware of being conscious?
