Humans, by studying nature and its laws, have increasingly discovered the close links between their life and the natural environment, between living and non-living components, as in “a common home”: links of mutual vital balance, coexistence, and survival. This recalls, as the Bible affirms, the primacy of humans to whom God entrusts the governance of nature (cf. Gen 1:26-28). But can the fear of losing natural resources and vital balances alone give humans the right relationship with nature? And if humans wanted to further distort nature with their powerful means, bending it to their whims and selfish purposes, perhaps only for a portion of inhabitants? Who can educate humans to love, to accept limits, and to respect the creation entrusted to them by God, if not the spirit they have within themselves, the image of the Creator God, with which they can love and preserve that “order” that God himself has entrusted to their intelligence and good will? Nature alone finds its life balances; conversely, humans, having freedom, cannot do so if they ignore the life of their spiritual soul.
